- Opera Grand Rapids is looking for 30-50 adults to join our chorus for the upcoming production of Porgy and Bess.
- This is a professional chorus--all chorus members will be paid a small fee. Those with solos will earn an additional fee.
- Performances will be at DeVos Hall on April 30 and May 1, 2010.
- All rehearsals will take place in the evening.
- Weekly music rehearsals will begin on March 1, 2010 in the beautiful new Betty Van Andel Opera Center at Fulton and Carlton in Uptown.
- Staging rehearsals will begin on April 17, 2010.
- Duane Davis will be the Chorus Master.
- Directed and Conducted by Robert Lyall, this will be a “semi-staged” opera with costumes and scenery.
- Porgy and Bess tells the story of Porgy, a crippled black man living in the slums of Charleston, South Carolina in 1920, as he attempts to rescue Bess from the clutches of Crown, her violent and possessive lover, and Sportin' Life, a drug dealer.
- Chorus members will play the roles of the African Americans who live on Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina in the 1920s.
- No previous stage experience is necessary!
