About Opera Grand Rapids' LEED Certified Home
For more than 42-years Opera Grand Rapids hasd wandered from empty storefronts, to office suites to rehearse its productions. In February 2010 the Company moved into its first permanent home, the Betty Van Andel Opera Center, 1320 East Fulton.
The 2.5 Million dollar green project was named after Betty Van Andel, who was a member of the Opera Grand Rapids Board of Trustees from 1981 to 1990. In 2001, the Jay and Betty Van Andel Foundation awarded Opera Grand Rapids a 1 Million dollar gift to jumpstart the building project. The long awaited Betty Van Andel Opera Center is the first Silver LEED certified opera center in the country.
The Opera Center is home to the Company's adminstrative offices, a rehearsal hall, vocal warm-up rooms, meeting spaces, and a costume shop.
